Newport, Kentucky is a city rooted in a rich history and colorful past, but it isn’t sitting still. Today, a seamless mix of new and old creates a uniquely vibrant character that is truly unmatched in the region.
This small town river city of over 15,000 residents is home to a number of big city amenities that are a result of decades of redevelopment. Beginning in the early 2000s, Newport’s riverfront became the envy of the region with the grand opening of the Newport on the Levee lifestyle center. The Levee has proven to be a catalytic project with a regional draw, attracting more than 3.5 million guests each year. Riverfront development continued throughout the 2000s to include luxury projects such as SouthShore Condominiums, Vue 180 on the Water and New Riff Distillery that have brought additional entertainment choices and living options to the banks of the Ohio River.
As a result of the development that occurred in the 2000s, another tide of development is flooding through the City of Newport, which include the projects like:
- Aqua on the Levee
- Newport Pavilion
- Monmouth Row
- Route 9 Expansion
- Taylor Creek Overlook Park
- Ferris Wheel
- Riverfront Commons
While these large-scale developments have certainly contributed to Newport’s successful transformation into an entertainment destination, the revitalization of the city’s historic neighborhoods have made Newport a popular place to call home. Beginning in the Historic East Row in the 1990s and continuing into the Westside neighborhood today, a significant effort by both public and private entities has been made to revitalize the city’s dense urban neighborhoods.
Witness Newport’s revival yourself on the Fall 2017 Beyond the Curb urban living tour, which will feature a sampling of the diverse projects that are reviving this River City.
